books, reading

Proverbial

Six years old seems like just about the right age to crank up my knowledge of proverbs. I surprised my parents by asking what it means not to get on a single nights’ worth of ice (my mums crazy translation of ‘niet over één nacht ijs gaan’). I surprised them even more by inquiring about the meaning of six other proverbs. I left out a single word for them to fill in each time. The next morning they found the riddles on the back of our Donald Duck calendar.

The proverbs got under my skin. At bedtime, instead of reading from Heksenbloed en Drakengoud,  I asked Hein to read to me from the dictionary of proverbs. I was disappointed when Hein insisted on also reading from Heksenbloed en Drakengoud instead of continuing on the proverbs.

In the morning I woke Maya by reading from the book. While laying out breakfast I told my parents about the most notewortht proverb I read: ‘A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.’

Tarek in the local newspaper!

We have a winner

We’re well impressed with the way Tarek coloured this picture. Definitely worth the €50 worth in books. We can only hope the jury will agree.  Now we have to drop it off at the Trojan Horse Bookhop, 35 years old this year. Hongera sana! (Same age as Kinderen voor Kinderen said Tarek.)

Books books books …. and grapes

To the library and afterwards to the bookshop. We came home with approximately 15 books. Tomorrow Tarek gets to sell and buy old books at the school book fair. It’s childrens book week, hurray!

Miko also loves books but she knows about priorities. Eat grapes first, then read books.

Just like my brother, mommy and daddy, I also like to ride my bicycle. This is me on the way to the station. But when i refused to take the bike onto the sidewalk my mom took my bike on the front of hers and put me on the back. We didn’t get far though because we found….

chestnuts! We collected as many as we could find before we rushed of to catch the train to Arnhem. We’d heard rumours that the main library is very nice. Before we went inside to check it out we played a bit in front. There was a giant sleeping aardvark to climb on.

The library was very nice indeed. I am not sure if my parents really noticed. They were busy chatting with the parents of two girls. They told us the oldest girl, Lidia, is just as old as Tarek. Tarek and Lidia played together a few times when they were 6 months old. Back in Dar es Salaam. Quite a coincidence, all the adults concluded. All I know is that it really is a very nice library.
