What has Hein been doing

2007/now: Work for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture linking agricultural and socio-
economic surveys to geophysical data, spatially presenting results of large surveys, mapping crop production,
developing courses in GPS and GIS and designing surveys. I also represent the institute on GIS issues
in East Africa. My own research focuses on geo-statistics, sampling and surveillance in agriculture and
crop disease prediction. Major topics I worked on are banana and cassava production, use of GIS in crop disease mapping,
food security and socio-economic analysis.

2008: Became father of Tarek.

2007: Emigrated to Tanzania .

2007: Married Maya.

2005/2007: Worked as a hydraulic project officer at Meander Research and Consultancy, focussing on: GIS modelling
of rivers in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, performing hydraulic calculations, analyzing vegetation
patterns in the forelands of the rivers and designing and producing atlases on hydraulics.

2004/05: As freelance consultant did several projects on land degradation and on soil erosion using
high resolution Digital Elevation Models.

2003: Got title Master of Science in Physical Geography, specializing in Geomorphology. Master thesis on vegetation
re-establishment and erosion intensity on landslides in eastern Spain.

2001: Developed a GIS of Maswa district in Tanzania during an internship.

2001/05: Part time salesman at Lundia Nederland.

1998/2001: Webmaster and treasurer of foundation De Schijnbeweging.
